Two men were found dead down-town last night, and city police are calling them suspicious deaths.

Cops were called just after 9 p.m. to the area underneath the 5th Ave. flyover near the Calgary Drop-In Centre where two bodies were laying about 10 metres from one another.

EMS officials confirmed being called in at 9:22 p.m. to attend to two men suffering from stab wounds.

But Acting Duty Insp. Kathy Grant said cops were still investigating the crime and wouldn’t confirm the causes of death.

"We’re in the very early stages of the investigation," Grant said.

Witnesses said people were attending a barbecue under the nearby Langevin Bridge when they heard a commotion and then found the pair in trouble.

They added when emergency personnel arrived on scene, people scrambled to flee the area, although some were trying to perform CPR on the victims, who were found by police laying on their backs.

Police, with the help of HAWC 1, rounded up people in the area to interview. One witness said he saw a man crossing the street with blood on his shirt just moments after the call came into police.

As was the case last night, Calgary’s homeless often gather to listen to a man preaching the word of God directly across from the drop-in shelter, said a witness familiar with the area.
